Morning Prayer

A Morning Prayer for Grief

Grief walked into the new day with you again — but so did God.

God, the mornings are the cruelest part because reality resets. For one second I forget, and then I remember all over again. Be in that terrible second with me today. Hold me in the remembering. Give me just enough strength for the next hour. That's all I'm asking for.

One hour at a time, one breath at a time — God is in every single one. That's enough for now. Amen.

When to pray this

Grief does not move in a straight line and it does not keep to a schedule. It ambushes you in grocery stores months after everyone else has moved on. There is no version of this prayer that makes it faster; it only asks you not to carry it alone.
